Racing 5km in Iraq

The end of June marked the completion of the first portion of Free to Run’s year-long program in Iraq - our Learn to Run sessions. To mark the occasion after months of learning, hard work, and dedication, a series of 5km races were organized for our teams in three locations, and we were thrilled to see so many runners competing in their first race!

Our team of Community Development Leaders also had an important role to play - lining up along the courses to cheer on and encourage their teammates to the finish line.

The atmosphere at these events was electric - a mix of excitement, nervousness, and pure joy.

Yesterday, I couldn’t sleep because I was anxious about the race. I even had a dream where I failed to complete the required kilometers. But today, I feel ready and confident. I really enjoyed the experience

In Erbil, after approximately 25 minutes, cheers erupted as Lamia from the Baharka community stole the show, crossing the finish line first to a hero's welcome! We saw tears of joy, triumphant laughter, and incredible camaraderie throughout the race. The entire group then rallied behind the remaining runners, creating a supportive and motivating atmosphere.

Following the race, a celebratory cake awaited participants. Two tables were set up: one overflowing with prizes for the top 10 finishers and the other laden with delicious food and refreshing drinks. CDLs Seveen and Sidra also addressed the group, adding to the celebratory spirit.

This race boosted my self-confidence and I’m excited to work hard to win in the upcoming races.

In Duhok, the race was held at the Olympic stadium where the team brought incredible energy to the event, despite the scorching 40°C/104°F heat as the race kicked off at 5pm. Rawan from Sharya Camp crossed the finish line first, receiving a special winner's cup! Following the race, a delicious dinner awaited everyone. The top five finishers, including three participants from Sharya and two from Domiz, were awarded medals, with the first-place winner receiving a special cup.

This day was fun especially since it was the first time I participated in such races and with a large number of girls… and it was beautiful and enjoyable. Some of them said they want these races to happen again because they really enjoy every time to attend a race or take sessions or exercise at the Free to Run organization.

Congratulations to everyone to took part in or supported these races, and thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the team! #TogetherStronger
