RUBA’S STORY

Ruba is a young Yazidi woman who became internally displaced in Iraq when her hometown was captured by ISIS militants. In 2023, she became one of the first women from Iraq to complete a marathon in the country.

"I joined Free to Run in March because I wanted to be part of something that was changing the norm for young women. When I began training for the marathon I was not an experienced runner, but my teammates taught me I could overcome any challenge.


On the day of the race, I felt a surge of empowerment knowing that I was not alone. It felt like together, we were reclaiming public space for women. I crossed the finish line with a smile on my face and tears of joy in my eyes.

The miracle was not that I finished though. The miracle was that I had the courage to start."
