WHAT IS A DONOR ADVISED FUND?

A donor-advised fund is like a charitable investment account, set up for the purpose of making gifts to charity. In the U.S. you can contribute cash, stocks, or other assets into the DAF and receive an immediate tax deduction. Your investment will grow tax-free, and you can make gifts to charities over time.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

  1. Establish Your Fund: You can set up a DAF through a public charity or financial institution by making an irrevocable initial contribution, which can include cash, stocks, or other assets.

  2. Receive Tax Benefits: Contributions to your DAF are tax-deductible in the year they are made, providing you with an immediate financial benefit and the ability to distribute funds later. You may also exceed standard deductions by combining donations of stock into a DAF.

  3. Grow Your Fund: The funds in your DAF can be invested, allowing for tax-free growth over time, which can increase your charitable giving capacity.

  4. Recommend Grants: The assets within your DAF now legally belong to the DAF provider, but you retain advisory privileges over disbursements made from the account. You have the flexibility to recommend grants to your preferred 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, like Free to Run, whenever you choose.

  5. Maintain Engagement: DAFs allow you to stay involved in your philanthropic efforts, track your giving, and adjust your giving strategy over time as your interests evolve.

Donor-advised funds are a popular choice for philanthropists who want to simplify their charitable giving, maximize tax benefits, and create a lasting impact on the causes they care about.
