FREE TO RUN BOARD CHAIR

POSITION PROFILE

The Board Treasurer is the principal financial officer of the Free to Run Board of Directors and serves as a key partner to the Board Chair and Executive Director in ensuring the financial health, sustainability, and accountability of the organization. The Treasurer provides strategic financial oversight, supports sound fiscal management, and helps the Board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities. Given Free to Run's international programming and operations in complex environments, the Treasurer also helps ensure appropriate oversight of multi-country finances, donor compliance requirements, organizational risk management, and the stewardship of resources across diverse operating contexts.

Individuals well suited for the role of Board Treasurer at Free to Run have experience in finance, accounting, investment management, nonprofit financial management, auditing, banking, or related fields. The ideal candidate is passionate about Free to Run's mission of advancing gender equity globally through running and possesses the skills, competencies, and experience necessary to successfully fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to serving as a general member of the Free to Run Board of Directors, a member of the Executive Committee and agreeing to Board terms, the Treasurer leads on the following activities:

  • Financial Stewardship and Oversight: Works closely with the Executive Director and relevant staff to oversee the financial health and sustainability of the organization. Reviews organizational financial performance and ensures that the Board has sufficient information to exercise its fiduciary responsibilities.

  • Budgeting and Financial Planning: Collaborates with the Executive Director and Board leadership to review and recommend annual operating budgets, forecasts, and major financial plans. Helps ensure that organizational resources are aligned with strategic priorities and long-term sustainability.

  • Financial Reporting: Reviews regular financial statements and reports prior to Board meetings and provides guidance to Board members in understanding financial performance, risks, and opportunities. Ensures that financial reporting practices are transparent, accurate, and timely.

  • Audit and Compliance: Oversees the Board's role in annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance activities. Serves as the primary Board liaison with the Executive Director and external auditors and supports management in maintaining strong financial controls and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Risk Management: Works with the Executive Director and Board to identify, assess, and monitor financial risks facing the organization. Supports the development and implementation of policies and practices that promote financial accountability and organizational resilience.

  • Strategic Planning: Contributes financial expertise to organizational strategic planning processes. Works with the Board Chair and Executive Director to evaluate the financial implications of strategic initiatives, growth opportunities, and major investments.

  • Fundraising: Supports the Board's fundraising responsibilities and works in collaboration with the Executive Director and Development Director to strengthen the organization's financial sustainability. The Treasurer fulfills their own Give/Get commitment ($5,000 annually) and leverages their networks and expertise to advance Free to Run's mission.

  • Policy Development: Supports the review and implementation of financial policies and procedures (largely captured in Free to Run’s Financial Management Framework and accompanying policies)  to ensure sound governance and stewardship of organizational resources.

24 months, with potential for renewal

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional experience in finance, accounting, auditing, banking, investment management, nonprofit financial management, or a related field

  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial statements, budgeting, financial controls, and financial reporting

  • Experience serving on a Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Audit Committee, or similar governance body preferred but not required

  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting principle, financial compliance requirements, and fiduciary responsibilities (especially in the United States, as Free to Run is headquartered in the U.S.)

  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to communicate financial concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences

  • Global sensibility and/or experience working internationally

  • High standards of integrity, accountability, and sound judgment

  • Ability and willingness to commit to the responsibilities of the role
