Success at the Erbil International Half Marathon

On December 27, 2024, a team of 50 incredible runners from Free to Run took on the Erbil International Half Marathon in Iraq - a race they’d been preparing for all year. Among them were Rahaf and Dima, who placed 4th and 5th (overall) in the race, and whose experiences show what happens when girls and young women are given the chance to participate in sports.

Rahaf’s Story:

Rahaf speaking with reporters after the race

Rahaf, a 13-year-old from Syria, has faced more challenges in her young life than many do in a lifetime. Forced to flee her home due to war, she and her family sought refuge in Iraq. Life in Erbil, however, presented new hurdles—Rahaf found herself confined to her home with little opportunity for social interaction or personal growth.

That all changed when she discovered Free to Run. Though nervous at first, Rahaf embraced the program with enthusiasm. With the unwavering support of her family, Free to Run facilitators, and peer mentors, she began to push past her fears and step outside her comfort zone.

Running quickly became her passion, according to Rahaf. She built friendships, gained confidence, and, most impressively, placed 4th overall at the Erbil International Half Marathon among hundreds of participants.

“Hard work pays off,” Rahaf says with pride. “I stayed consistent in running even on the hardest days, and I got 4th place.”

Beyond the physical achievements, Rahaf has changed in ways she never expected. She has developed self-awareness, empathy, and a newfound sense of independence. Running has given her not just physical strength, but the courage to dream big. Her aspirations? To complete a full 42.2km marathon, become a pediatric doctor, and mentor other young girls through Free to Run.

If her life were a book or movie, she says she would call it Never Give Up—a fitting title for a journey defined by perseverance and heart.

Dima’s Story

Dima receiving her medal

Dima grew up in a small village in Iraq, where many girls were unable to continue their education beyond the 6th grade. When her family moved to Duhok, she found herself isolated at home while her peers attended school. But in 2024, when Free to Run conducted outreach in her area, Dima saw an opportunity for change.

Eager to join, she faced an immediate obstacle: convincing her father and brother to allow her participation. With support from the Free to Run team, she successfully gained their approval and became an active member. Though she was initially reserved, over three months she began to open up, make friends, and develop a love for running.

Her dedication led her to set her sights on competing in the Erbil International Marathon. But once again, she faced a challenge—her father was initially reluctant for her to participate. The Free to Run team worked to explain Dima’s aspirations and the significance of this opportunity, and eventually, he agreed.

On race day, Dima lined up at the start, ready to take on the 21km course. It wasn’t easy—by the second lap, fatigue set in—but she pushed through with the support of her teammates. Crossing the finish line in 5th place, she was met with overwhelming pride from her family.

“I was uncertain if my parents would allow me to join the marathon in another place,” Dima shares. “But when I placed 5th and saw the pride in my father’s eyes as he said, ‘Great job,’ I realized this journey was not just mine—it was ours.”

More Than Just a Race

To the entire Free to Run team of 50 runners who participated in this race—congratulations! Your dedication and commitment continue to inspire. And to Rahaf and Dima, thank you for showing us what’s possible when girls have the space to push themselves and go after their goals.
